Animals, primarily dogs and cats, are mistreated everyday, all around Serbia

Goals:

Raise awareness of people about the animal rights and ways to properly treat animals.
Raise funds to build and maintain a multi-species animal shelter. In the first stage, a sum of 100.000 Euros is needed for the construction of the shelter.
Bring up this issue in the media and influence the government to change its policies

Society against child abuse

Child abuse has become a serious and frequent problem in our society

Due to a difficult situation in our country's economy, people and especially parents have become more and more stressed and intolerant to children. Many of them don't event notice if their child has a problem of any kind, which can be a dangerous threat to the further communication and parent-child relationship, which in most cases leads to abuse, whether physical or emotional. The consequences are catastrophic. Society must do something to stop this horror!

Target groups: Abused children and teenagers.

Kind of help that would be given: The main target is to save as many child abuse victims as possible and make them feel safe by building them homes, and, of course, to raise consciousness about this particular problem which is, unfortunately, widely spread in our country. That is why concentrating on our closest environment, blocks and neighborhood can be of a huge importance.
Familiar with any cases in your surrounding? Why not join some of our volunteer group and help us with the cause?

The amount of money needed: When talking about a serious problem like this, the amount of raised money is never quite enough to save the victims, prevent child abuse in future and inform and raise awareness about this cause. However, to begin with, our plan is to raise £25,000, which is enough for building and furnishing a safe house into which we would move the victims.

Charity event: Our friend, one of the donors herself, Milly O'Donnell, an aspiring young photographer, has done a photo shoot of abused children. Photographs showing bruises, fractures and cuts indicate that we should take this cause very seriously and do everything that is in our power to stop it and prevent it. The exhibition will be held on Tuesday, 25th of May 2011 at the Lord Hemingway Art Gallery. All potential donors, as well as volunteers are more than welcome to come and help us win this battle.

Assignments: Our volunteers are divided into four groups, all doing all they can to inform our citizens about this problem and invite as many people as possible to the art gallery. The first group of volunteers will take care about the publicity of the problem through the media, as well as on the Internet and by passing leaflets on the streets. The second one, however, will make a list of possible donors - individuals and companies, and invite our hometown celebrities to help as well. The third group of volunteers will help organizing the event itself and the last group of volunteers will make sure that all donations are documented. All groups are given two months to do the assignments given.

Children's Shelter

The main goal is to take homeless and disadvantaged children off the streets and provide some kind of shelter. The project duration is one year.

Target Group: Disadvantaged and homeless kids

The kind of help that would be given:The main target is to provide shelter for kids, so we will offer free hot meals and a place to sleep at our safehouse. The place will be open all day and our main goal is to bring as many children as we can.

Money needed for this event: aproximately 1,000,000 dinars is estimated to be needed for this event.

Raising money for this event: We are going to raise money through various companies sponsorships, and large charity events including a concert, that is taking place in June, and donations from people who are more advantaged and who are willing to help. We will also open a special bank account where you could pay your donations.

Tasks:

Nikola will be raising awarenes on how big a problem this is through various promotional adverts, starting from the beginning of the project, which is in April, until the end of July.

Kaca will be responisble for organising a big concert. She will start in May and finish by the 10th of June.

Ivana will be responsible for inviting companies sponsorships through presentations। She will start in April and finish in June.

Vesna will be responsible for taking care of the money throughout the hole event.

Your little is a world for them!

There are a lot of abused poor kids living on the street in cruel conditions without basic things for living but WE can help them! All you have to do is to be generous and willing to make a little effort! The charity known as SOS Children in Serbia is organising a big one year action to raise the money for them through a lot of events! Take part in it!

Target groups: adults and young adults

Kind of help: All people willing to get involved in the action can help by donating money or old clothes, toys and food. The people who who like art can come and spend time with people who are endangered, showing them some skills. The teachers can join and teach kids various things since they are not in a position to go to school.

Money needed: not less than 1,000,000 dinars because there are a lot of poor kids around us!

Charity events: Our plan is to organize a lot of cultural events where tickets, drinks, T-shirts and souvenirs will be sold and, of course, all the money we earn will be donated to the charity. Also, the talented kids, who are endangered, can do some performances and get their own money. We can make actions in which kids will be helping in some factories and shops and be paid for it, too.

Tasks for members:
Katarina - should promote the campaign by making posters and short TV-documentaries about conditions in which those kids are living - throughout the campaign

Nikola will look for sponsorships in big companies (we should collect 1/3 of the money through sponsors) - before any event

Luka will be responsible for organising concerts and cultural events twice a month in the Budućnost stadium in Valjevo - we should know who's going to perform on the beginning of every month through the whole campaign

Vesna will collect donations from people willing to help (we should raise 2/3 of whole amount by this) and do economical stuff - utill the end of campaign

Ivana will be looking after all of them and take care if everything is all right - until everything is over

An outbreak of language has officially been confirmed. Communicable by mouth and highly infectious, English language has become all but uncontainable . Over the past four centuries it has crossed oceans and continents and nowadays it has become the second language to all of Europe and the vast majority of other countries.

In additon to personal reasons for preferring English language, one must not forget that it is one of the official languages in the UN and it is widely recognized as an international business language.

With the appearance of the Internet and due to large part of information being in English, people from all around the world have been either forced to learn it or they have done it willingly. Either way the result is the same. Hollywood production also helped, which made some people develop a criterion that all good movies must be in English.

All this does not necessarily need to be a bad thing. With the borders open for students transfers and touristic travel you need a way of communicating with foreigners. That is not a problem anymore. You can have all your lectures in English and be confident that the people you meet will understand you. Benefits of having a world language are huge.

However, there are some downsides, unless, of course, you are a native speaker of English and as such its passionate proponent. As a result of rapid progression with which English is spreading on social networks (Facebook), movies, internet, business world and fashion magazines, we find our own language flooded with strange expressions and new words. There is no doubt that, with the current situation and given some time, our mother tongue will eventually be irreversibly transformed.

All in all, with so many benefits of knowing English language, you are bound to learn it, but you must also make sure not to forget your own indentity.

English language is a virus. It spreads more quickly than any other language which is in use. It has infected the Internet, newspaper, TV and other languages. A lot of cultures are losing their language heritage. Believe it or not, that is also the case with English! French, German and many other words from foreign cultures have infiltrated English. Linguists from the UK are having concerns that English will become the same as other languages which have lost their true form.
Serbian culture is over a thousand years old. Serbs, known under numerous names, have introduced ground-breaking things, from eating with forks and knifes in the Middle Ages to AC power system in the 19th century to Milanković's cycles at the beginning of the last century, which are still in use today. Even though a fairly developed country, Serbia has been highly influenced by other cultures, as far as it concerns the language. Whichever country Serbia was under, has left its marks. The Byzantine Empire has left the architecture, Turkey the language. As a result of the World War II and Nazis occupation, German overtook many fields of Serbian language. A lot of people people thought that our language would evolve only within its own borders, but this has proven wrong. More and more foreign words are being used as Serbian ones nowadays, with a large predominance of English. This is especially due to the development of the Internet and its reign over young generations, as well as popularity of business management.
Languages are viruses, but at the same time every language should be vaccinated against intruders.

Nowadays English language is becoming something that linguists call 'lingua franca' - a widely spread foreign language which we use as our second language or even as our mother tongue. Understandably, this is due to the fact that the areas where English has the most native speakers are economically, politically and territorially overpowering. These territories are dictating the speed of development, trends, technology, professional literature, etc. All of us have a need to keep in touch with global events, up-to-date technology and people from all parts of the world, so the easiest way to do this is to communicate in the same language.

Nevertheless, we spend most of our lifetime in our native country and we are in everyday touch with its tradition, customs and language. There are a lot of people who think that we mustn't lose sense of them because the differences between countries are something that make this world a valuable place. The most extreme protagonists of this idea plead for prohibition of all English words which have influence on our mother tongue.

The Tennis Game

Lead-in

At the beginning of this session students will be introduced basic facts about tennis, equipment and history of the game. After short presentation, their task will be to search internet (on their preferred search engine) and find the roots of word 'tennis'. With this activity students will practice their self intelligence.

Main activity

In this part of class students will learn about basic strokes and rules in tennis game. After that they will play a little game which includes logical and kinesthetic abilities. One student will get a tennis ball and then say loud a specific shot in tennis. Depending on which shot he mentioned he will throw a ball to next student with his right or left hand. The game ends when one student can't remember any shots or throw a ball with wrong hand. All others students are winners and they will be rewarded with chocolate bar.

Wrap-up

The lesson will end with talk about famous player and biggest tournaments. As a learning activity students will solve given crosswords with names of notable players. Also they will discuss their favorite tournaments and players and their styles of game. This activity develops students' social and spatial skills.

Do a pair activity of tracing letters of the words (story, words, fifty, write) on each other's back. Brainstorm the main topic of the lesson with students: writing fifty-word stories.
This satisfies students with outstanding kinesthetic intelligence.

Main activity

Lead-in

Play hang-man to guess some words related to the title of the song: empire, state, mind. Divide the group into pairs. Each pair has to guess one of the words. The third word will be guessed by both pairs in a competition. One student writes the words on the board and class tries to guess the title of a famous song. This activity will be suitable for students with prominent kinesthetic and social intelligences.

Main activity

Students are given gapped lyrics of the song in an interactive Hot Potatoes activity. They are asked to listen to the song and fill in the missing words. After 5 minutes, the person with the highest number of filled gaps gets the prize (chocolate banana). This activity caters for students with musical intelligence.

Wrap-up

Students are given 5 minutes to read as much information as possible about Alicia Keys on Wikipedia. They are divided into 2 groups and quizzed with trivia questions about Alicia Keys. The group with the highest score wins the prize (chocolate bar).

Objectives

The aim of the session is to improve communication skills, especially asking questions, which is one of the most important fields in creating good understanding between people. Also, this session has tasks designed to include the most suitable way of learning according to the type of participant’s intelligence, which were defined by tests. Most of students have visual and body movement type of learning, so this session is based on that.

Time

15-20 minutes

Material Required

- Markers in different colors (green, red, blue, black and orange)
- Four white pieces of paper
- Chairs.

Procedure

At the beginning of the session the presenter/teacher draws a mind map of communication skills on the board and asks students which communication skills the good communicator should have. The answers are written in the map. If participants do not remember all of the skills, the presenter will help them. This part of the session takes two or three minutes.

After that, the phrase ‘asking question’ can be underlined and three type of questions stressed: open questions, closed questions and alternative questions. Each type is explained separately with an example. Also, this part of session will be interactive as much as possible. It takes about three minutes.

In addition, the group is divided into two subgroups. The first one will be asked to go out and the second one will get a task to draw anything they want. The drawings must be designed on blank pieces of paper by using colored markers. They will have five minutes to fulfill this task. After that, the teacher places chairs in the center of the classroom. The chairs must be in pairs and back to back. Each student in the classroom should bring his/her own drawing and sit on a chair in one of the pairs. The subgroup from the outside is invited to enter the classroom and take a seat on free chairs. After that, the performer delivers a new set of blank pieces of paper and colored markers to the students from second subgroup and explains what their task is.

More precisely, their task is also linked with designing. They should ask their partner what there is in his/her drawing and make a copy based on the answers. They can use all types of questions, which are mentioned at the beginning of class. The second subgroup has five minutes to fulfill the task.

Finally, the teacher puts up all drawings on the board and compares them together with the group. If someone has a good sense of humor he/she will be encouraged to give comments in a funny way.

The conclusion to be reached after the presentation is: “Asking question is an extremely important skill in communication”.

The presentation will be finished with a question too. This is: “How do you feel after the presentation and what do you think about it?”

Now that our whole group has done the Multiple Intelligences test we can see our score for the whole group in the following table:

Task 5: Think of something that you know and like so much that you would like to share it with the group. Make some notes about what you would like to present. How many different aspects would you like to include and how much time do you think you will need?

Task 6: How would you present it? What activities and techniques would you use to engage the most frequent intelligences of the whole group? Which would you use to pair up people with similar top strenghts and juxtapose them with those of the other pair/group? This MI Practice might give you some ideas.

Task 7: Plan the resources you will need: paper, computer, software, CD player, photocopier, etc.

Task 8: Write your presentation plan and prepare all resources. Post the plan to Lingva Digerati blog and ask your teacher to help you with resources. Practice your presentation and check your timing. Include some feedback questions for the end. What would the group members definitely remember, and what would they do differently?

Task 9: Give your presentation. Remember that the more enthusiastic you are the more positive reception you will get. Do not forget to ask for feedback.

Miodrag Stojkovic is one of the most controversial Serbian geneticists. After getting a degree Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, he started his research. He is famous for inserting patient's own DNA into the embryo. There was a lot controversy about that. In spite of the public scrutiny he continued working on stem cells in an institute in Valencia, Spain. As a result of his research, a cure for numerous, previously incurable illnesses may be found (for example Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's and heart diseases). He has been named the honorary citizen of Leskovac (his hometown).

Vojin Djordjevic became famous as a businessman in the 1990s when he set up a private company for producing drinks in Subotica. Today he is not as successful as he was, but I admire him a lot because he has established many business rules which other business people have accepted as a standard.

Firstly, he has broken many of traditional rules of management. Also, he employs people he likes personaly, which is more important for him than their qualifications. Then he constantly asks his employees about every aspect of business and he tries to accept all arguments and ideas which are useful. Although he has had several business failures in the past, he has always survived and started anew.

In conclution, he did not start doing business to make money. He only wanted challenge and fun.

Srdjan Dragojevic is a famous Serbian film director. I admire his work a lot and especially like his films "We Are Not Angels" and "Pretty Village, Pretty Flame". These have been ones of the most popular movies in Serbia in the last decade or two. The first one, his diploma work, is a comedy by genre and it made outstanding success as a debut movie. However, the second one, despite having some comic elements, is a drama about war-torn Bosnia and a bitter satire about the latest Balkan conflicts. After having a lot of success in Serbia, Srdjan tried to make a Hoolywood career but failed to find any studio interested in his work. I hope that he will succeed in the future, make a breakthrough with an international career and, of course, direct a large number of new brilliant movies.

She has become a UNICEF National Ambassador for Serbia and has taken part in many charitable campaigns. Her inspiration to begin playing was Monika Seles. She won the 2008 French Open and was a runner-up in the 2008 Australian Open. She is a former World No.1 Serbian tennis player but I am certain that it will not be her last achievement.

On the other hand, some people say that students can easily be on the wrong path if they work while studying, because they will not have enough time to learn. To make matters even worse, statistics show that they tend to work longer and study less to the point where they get completely out of touch with their studies.

This does not mean there are no advantages. Doing part-time work should be the way to make students more disciplined, self-controlled and, generally, to prepare them for life. First, they can be independent; second, they can improve their work habits. As our people say, "Your own money is the sweetest." Getting to know new people or learning things totally different from what books say or from what they are studying can be very exciting.

When addressing a Serbian person, it is polite to use their first name. In more formal situations you should use Sir or Madam, but you won’t be wrong if use their surname only. It is usual to shake hands when you meet a Serbian person, kiss each other three times, no matter whether that person is old or young, a man or a woman. I don’t like that, but there are not many like me. You can also see Serbian couples holding hands and kissing in public. It is quite a normal situation in Serbia, even though older people don’t approve it.

If you are invited to someone’s home you should never take off your shoes – you should do that only if they insist. Bring something as gift, a bottle of wine would be quite all right. There are no differences between westerners and Serbians during the meal, but it is expected from you to eat a lot. It is very common for Serbians to eat a big portion. You should even sing with them, especially after you have had a couple of glasses of famous Serbian plum brandy.

Finally , you should never insult Serbian or Orthodox Saints. A Serbian person may or may not show any anger, but they will certainly remember it, and you will lose all your credits.

The capital, Belgrade is real metropolis. There are also several big cities you should see - Novi Sad, Niš, Subotica, but I am recommending smaller towns and beautiful villages. If you are tired, you can be sure that one weekend on the mountains in Serbia with their fresh air, healthy spring water and tasty home made food will bring you back to life. Serbs are perfect hosts. The way they are taking care about guests is unique. You would not find such a warm atmosphere anywhere else in the world. There is, usually plenty of domestic products to light up your mood.

At each step in this country you will be fascinated about its natural beauties and that is what I like the best about Serbia. Sometime, insufficiently developed infrastructure and lack of road signs can cause a problem. Fortunately, local people can be helpful, so you will never be alone in this country.

YOU ARE NEVER ALONE IN THIS COUNTRY

Can you imagine people between Eastern and Western culture?

When addressing a Serbian person, it is polite to use their first name. In more formal situations you should use Mr. or Ms, but you won’t be wrong if use their surname. It is usual to shake hand when you meet Serbian person, kiss each other, no matter if that person is older or young. I don’t like that. You can see Serbian couples holding hand and kissing in public. It is normal situation in Serbia. Older people don’t approve it. If you are invited to someone’s home you should never take off your shoes only if they insist than do take off. Bring something for gift, perhaps bottle of wine would be quite all right…
There are no differences between westerns and Serbian during the meal, but it is expected from you to eat a lot. It is very common for Serbian to eat a big portion. You should even sing with them.
Finally , you should never insult Serbian or Orthodox Saints. Serbian person maybe won’t show anger, maybe do, but they certainly remember it. And you will lose all your credits

Dear Jovan,
I'm really sorry to hear that such a disastrous event has happened in your family. I can't imagine what it feels like to be in such a position. The least I can do is to give you my best advice.

The most important thing to do now is to stay with your sister, for the first two or three weeks. You need to be with her and talk her through this. Help your sister understand what has happened. You should wait and see how she is holding. After that, depending on how your sister is feeling, you can make a decision. Try taking her to some of your relatives, people she knows. Your sister could feel safer with them than with strangers. While she is with them make another effort for the scholarship, you shouldn't miss an opportunity like that. You might discuss your situation with the people in charge and ask them to freeze your first year at university.

If things don't work out for your sister you could quit schooling easily. You would be able to visit her every other weekend. It won't cost you anything since the goverment is paying. In the worst case you cold always come back to Valjevo and have a job. Anyway, if you miss this scholarship, don't worry, you can always find another one.

Ana, this is a very nice story.

As I sat down at the bus station, I felt something moving next to my leg. It was afternoon and it was raining. I was waiting for the bus.

I looked down and saw a small grey kitten twisting around my leg. It was thin and dirty and its voice was so weak that I could hardly hear it. At first, I was scared of catching a disease or getting fleas, but soon I felt very sorry for him and decided to help him. I wanted to take it in my arms but… Huh! Than I looked in my bag and found two pieces of paper, wrapped the kitten and took him to the nearest store. Then I bought some milk and gave it to the kitten. Obviously, it was very hungry.

After that, it looked better and sounded better as well. Well, that moment I probably should have turned and walked home, but I just could not. I took him home, washed it … and that is a short story about beginning of my friendship with Jimmy.

My mother came, and said that I was in a coma-like state for hours. They found me in the woods, near the exit. My shirt was chewed near the shoulder, like someone dragged me in its mouth. I tought that it would be hard to make friends here but it was realy easy. I'm in group of five guys and three preaty and very crazy girls. Engleshers aren's so bad as we tought, they are realy cool and funy. We are going every night in near by pub where we spend much time talking and joking with each others. I think you should come here and I'll met you with them!
One thing that i miss from home, except you and other company, is food! Food isn't so good as it is at home, but it is OK, i can eat it...
